Configure Domino Server for Lotus QuickR Part 2

IBM Lotus Domino Configuration

In the first part we have seen how to install Domino Server. We are now ready to configure Domino Server. The initial configuration of Domino Server can be divided in two parts:

  • Configure Server and Certificate
  • Install Notes / Domino Designer / Administrator to complete the initial configuration

How to configure Domino Server

At this point we are ready to proceed with the initial configuration of the Domino Server by launching the Lotus Domino Server command. Let’s use the Lotus Domino Server link. Whereas the other one offers a command prompt console showing in real time important messages about the Domino server components.

The Domino Server wizard will start and as a first option offers the ability to configure the Fonts for the language settings. I’m pretty comfortable with the default ones also considering I have removed all the graphic effects on Windows to same on RAM Memory on this virtual machine! Let’s click on next to continue.

Since this is our first instance we can go with the first option to install the first server or stand-alone server to configure Domino server.

We can now choose the name of the Domino Server. I would personally recommend to use the Hostname and also making sure the FQDN name resolution is working both ways. Changing the Domino server name later can be a tedious process and not recommended.

Again we can leave the other options untouched. In fact during this install to configure Domino server a new Server ID file will be generated.

This is the step where we generate the Server ID file. A very important fileas all the nsf and other important files and configurations can be decrypted or opened using the cert.id file.

We can now specify the domain name where the Domino server belongs to. In this case we need to specify the NetBIOS Domain name.

Let’s make sure we also retain a local copy of the “admin.id” for future use.

At the moment just the HTTP Services are required which will be configured later on in the next step. Eventually we can also rerun this wizard to modify options to configure Domino server.

Let’s make sure the settings from the NIC are properly detected.

During the configure Domino setup wizard we can also choose to enable ACLs hence prohibiting Anonymous Access to configuration files and databases. Such settings are enabled by default.

The wizard to configure Domino server has now all the basic information we can review before amending changes and continue with the setup.

The configure Domino wizard is now running the main setup and prepare and configure all main databases.

The install process is very quick and once complete we can hot on the finish button to proceed with updates or Fix Packs.

At this point we can install the available update for the Domino Server version in use. As per this scenario at the time of writing this is FixPack 5. Let’s accept the agreement and continue.

Let’s verify the detected path pointing at Binaries and Data. This is important to avoid errors later on.

And next to confirm the selection. When successfull this will also show the detected release.

The Fix Pack is now rolling the updates.

As per previous setup also this install is very quick and runs in a couple of minutes. Once done hit on close to exit.

Perfect this part is now completed. Next will be about installing:

  • Lotus Notes Client
  • Domino Administrator
  • Domino Designer
Configure Domino Lotus Notes install

Let’s start the main wizard for Lotus Notes client. This can be any version. Not necessarily need to be on very same release of the Domino Server. For more information is always a good idea to read the pertinent release notes. We can install this on the same server or a separate machine.

Let’s accept the license agreement and continue.

In this case we can select the default path to install Lotus Notes program files and data files.

Let’s make sure the Domino Designer and Administrator are selected. We’ll require these components later on.

At this point the installer is ready to carry on with the Lotus Notes installation. As desired we can change the default program associations emails, calendar and contacts.

The setup now installs the Lotus Notes application.

The installation process only takes a few moments and we can hit on finish when ready.

This now concludes this second part of the series. Next is to configure specific components settings in the Domino Server as per next article.
