With the latest wave of Veeam updates to v11 for the Backup & Replication, also the VeeamONE has been updated to include latest changes and compatibility. The aim of this article is to show how easy and straight forward is to run the VeeamONE v11 upgrade. In particular this procedure refers to an existing VeeamONE v10 or prior on v9.5 to the latest and the greatest today VeeamONE v11.
From a cosmetic point of view VeeamONE v11 upgrade probably represents the biggest change. In fact both the VeeamONE Monitor and Reporter have been fully re-written to run in a fresh web interface. All the features from previous versions have been ported and even new ones have been added like the ability to report on protection for NAS Backups, Nutanix workloads, Physical machines, Agents and Cloud workloads in AWS and Azure. All of this under the same roof. And there’s more, for example improved hypervisors metrics and sampling. Very useful for the nitty gritty details that can be used for custom reports for special teams looking after critical applications. Of course all of this can even be further extended with native SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) allowing export and collaboration with 3rd-party applications seamless. More on this additional features in dedicated articles.
VeeamONE can work standalone and of course in tandem with Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR). In the latter case best practice is to run the VeeamONE v11 upgrade first and then VBR on a later stage. The upgrade steps are pretty simple. Before proceeding it is always recommended to run a backup of the VeeamONE database. This is easily accomplished with a standard SQL backup or even using the built-in utility in the VeeamONE Monitor > Settings > Server Settings > Other > Support utility.
VeeamONE v11 upgrade overview
Once downloaded the ISO file from the Veeam Download page and mounted on the server next is to start the VeeamONE v11 upgrade simply using the wizard. The splash screen will take a few seconds to determine the components installed and propose the upgrade path. Same procedure works for additional VeeamONE Client install on additional machines when available.
The VeeamONE v11 upgrade leveraged additional Microsoft Windows components which are detected and installed directly from the ISO file without need of connectivity to the internet. Hit OK to continue.
Next is the screen to accept the EULA and proceed with the install.
At this points the VeeamONE installer determines the version of the binaries previously installed. The VeeamONE installer searches and detects the Server, Reporter and Monitor components.
In the next step the VeeamONE installer wizard checks the existing and new dependencies. The missing ones again will be installed from the re-distributable packages already included in the ISO file. All in all the process is very quick.
At this point the process is ready to continue.
Next important bit is the location where to find the existing database. By default the wizard will read and report the current location from the existing database. It is always a good idea to take a backup before making any change to the database. Previous settings are absolutely fine and hit next to continue.
A quick screen about the license which will be automatically update to latest version 11.
VeeamONE Server uses specific ports and a self-signed certificate. Both can be changed at anytime if required.
At this point the installer has the main info to proceed with the install. The database upgrade time varies based on current resources and the size of the database itself. In this case with 6 GB database on a VeeamONE server running just with 2 CPUs and 4 GB RAM took only a few moments to run the upgrade. Very fast indeed.
In the next steps the wizard will automatically stop the VeeamONE services, copy the new files, start the services and load the info directly from the updated database.
A few moments later and the wizard shows the successful VeeamONE v11 upgrade.
Starting the VeeamONE Monitor already shows the updated GUI and the info directly from the VeeamONE database. Same process can also be repeated on the additional clients installed on other machines. In this case the VeeamONE wizard will automatically detect and upgrade the VeeamONE Monitor Client components.
