In this part of the article we’ll proceed with the first configuration of the VMware VDP appliance. Details about the pre-installation steps are available here. So after the first boot from the console view we can review more importantly the IP address manually/automatically assigned to the appliance, login locally to the appliance or even set the Timezone. As we’ll see later on the correct NTP services and Timezone configuration are key to avoid issues with the installation. The appliance also provide a web based wizard which comes very handy for first time configuration. So all we need to do is to browse to the https:// <VDP-IP-Address:8543/vdp-configure> which is the default location where to access the configuration utility
We can access using the following credential:
Username: root
Password: changeme
We are now ready to proceed with the configuration utility
Let’s provide or confirm the required IP settings. Also I would suggest to confirm FQDN name resolution for both vCenter and VDP appliance is working as expected making sure that at least they have similar response time
Let’s select the desired Timezone
We can ow specify a new password for the root account
We can now connect to the vCenter and test the connection before proceeding
At this point we can specify the storage installation type depending on our requirements. The storage can be increased later on and grows up to increments of 1 TB
For the purpose of this testing installation I will leave the option to store the additional Disks (3 disks just for backup storage) that will be created together with the “System Disks” within the appliance. Or alternatively it is possible to specify the location where the 3 Disks will be created in separate Datastores. I will cover more on the topic in a dedicated post
This are the minimum requirements in terms of CPU and RAM memory. Increase these according to your environment
Choose if you want to participate to Product Improvement program
Ideally we can run the performance analysis but it is not mandatory at this point. it can be run later on after the wizard has completed. as depending on the storage available can take a long time
At this point the settings are committed

At this point all settings are committed and the appliance will reboot
After the reboot is completed allow a couple more minutes and in the vCenter you should be able to see a new icon available as per screenshot below.
When selecting the VDP at this point we are ready to connect and register the vCenter to the desired VDP appliance
If everything goes well we should see the Getting Started page from where we can configure Backup /Restore and other settings which will be covered in separated articles
