Intel NUC BIOS update to latest version

As mentioned in the previous article, we are now ready to review and configure the main Intel NUC BIOS settings making sure the installed RAM memory and Disk Drives are recognised and working properly. As soon as we boot the Intel NUC there are the classic 3 options being “F2” the one we’ll be using to configure the BIOS.

From the homepage of the Intel Visual BIOS we can check the current version of the firmware and the total memory installed. This one is shipping with version “51”. After a quick check from the Intel NUC 6i5SYH support page and filtering by Download and OS type we can get to he latest version of the firmware. At the time of writing it is version “57” available at this link.

There are different options on how to apply the latest version. I personally prefer to update to the latest version by running the utility built-in the BIOS (F7) in the Intel NUC Bios. So in my case the next steps will be to download the SYS0057.BIO and place it on a USB Drive formatted with FAT32 file system.

Once we plugged in the USB drive let’s press F7 to start the import process or press F7 directly upon first boot which will lead to the screenshot below. Just in case let’s do a rescan to refresh the content of the mounted drives.

The intel NUC will reboot and start flashing the firmware to the latest version. Make sure there are no extra steps provided on the Intel website with regards to the Firmware updates. In the past there might have been issues when flashing “very old” versions directly to the latest ones. For brand new Intel NUC shouldnt be an issue. If you find used ones from eBay for example make sure the BIOS update process goes step by step as per instructions provided on the Intel website.

This process doesn’t take long and at this point we can also confirm the update to the latest version plus the RAM memory and Disk configuration working in order.

At this point we might want to explore and customise the Intel NUC BIOS setting if required. More importantly let’s make sure the Boot order is setup as intended for the future Host restarts. It’s now time to move to the next step: preparing the ESXi installation media
